If you’re a website owner then at some point you will hear that you need to optimize your website. Regardless of what your website is about, you need to do it. Period.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.
SEO is all about relevance and visitor satisfaction. This means your website should be relevant for queries and therefore able to rank well for it. You can either be a white hat or black hat (spammer). But all this also depends on who is doing the SEO and how the site is deployed.
While thinking about this, let’s have a look at the steps on how to SEO your website.
Write great content
There’s a saying among webmasters and it’s this- “Content is king.”
Real good, in depth, and informative articles are golden. You can never have too much great content.
The rule here is to write for people first, then the search engine. In essence, it means quality work is very important. The entire search engine world will recognize your website on that. Consequently, readers will “back link” (add links from their websites to yours) and more traffic will be flowing to your website. Avoid stuffing keywords as this is penalized and may bring your site rankings lower.
Submit your content to websites like Delicious, Reddit and many other aggregators of content. This will in turn gain you more readerships. If you have old content, go back and rewrite it. This is because SEO rules keep changing and your knowledge of SEO and practices last year will definitely be different this year. You can do this by updating the image attributes, adding your links to more sites and your homepage as well. Make sure you rewrite them with your SEO hat on while avoiding sites with irrelevant content. You can earn some brownie points from the search engine if you republish your content as a new and fresh article.
Backlink from trusted sites
You have probably heard about natural links. This is nothing different from links from sites with relevant content as yours with good PR trying to get their readers to your page. While doing this make sure the sites have a reason to link back. Perhaps, write some great content relevant to theirs; this can direct additional links to your site without even asking for them. Google simply wants to see links with editorial rights on your site. Always shoot to get great relevant backlinks from trusted sites.
Alt Tags. Do not leave image attributes hanging.
Pictures are very crucial to a website though search engines really don’t know how to manage them unless that nitty-gritty information like alternate text, caption, the title and description are all completed. Just be ethical while doing this and avoid copy pasting keywords as this may be detrimental to a website’s ranking of SEO. Ensure your website’s images and pictures are highly visible if you want more potential customers to your site.
Diversify your website’s internal anchor text links.
The term “anchor text” refers the words that you use when creating a hyperlink from one page to another. For example, when you see the words “click here,” it’s usually a link leading to another web page. The words “click here” are “anchor text.” Variation is needed for when those blue anchor text links are created. These search engine crawlers follow the page links to where you have placed information on your site and what the page it’s heading to is about.
Your site’s word court.
There is an online rule that readers do not actually read. But that doesn’t mean you deprive them of great and juicy content. Ensure your word count per page is a minimum of 350 and be aware that the more you write the more related your content will be to the keywords in question.
